Buon Ma Thuot
Geographical Indication
Vietnam's first Geographical Indication for coffee, granted by the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP) in 2005. The GI legally protects the name "Buon Ma Thuot" for coffee produced in designated areas of Dak Lak Province meeting defined quality standards.
What Is the Buon Ma Thuot GI?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is an intellectual property right that identifies a product as originating from a specific geographic location, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic is essentially attributable to that geographic origin. The Buon Ma Thuot GI was the first GI granted by Vietnam for any coffee product — a landmark recognition of Dak Lak's distinctive terroir and its role as the world's foremost Robusta origin.
The GI was formally registered under Vietnam's intellectual property framework, originally established via Decree 54/2000/ND-CP on the protection of industrial property rights relating to trade secrets, geographical indications, trade names and internet domain names, and subsequently governed under Vietnam's IP Law (Law No. 50/2005/QH11), which came into force on 1 July 2006.
The GI is administered by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP / Cục Sở hữu trí tuệ — Cục SHTT), under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee holds the right to manage and develop the GI on behalf of the local coffee-producing community.
Geographic Scope of the GI
The GI covers coffee produced in Buon Ma Thuot city and the districts of Dak Lak Province that form the traditional coffee-growing zone around the city. The specific administrative units within the GI zone include the city of Buon Ma Thuot and surrounding districts including Cư M'gar, Krông Pắc, Krông Ana, Krông Búk, Buôn Đôn, Cư Kuin, Ea Kar, and adjacent areas of Dak Lak Province.
Coffee grown outside the designated GI zone — even if of the same variety and quality — may not carry the "Buon Ma Thuot" name commercially. This protects both producers within the zone and international buyers who rely on the geographic name as a quality signal.
Quality Requirements Under the GI
To legitimately carry the Buon Ma Thuot GI, coffee must meet quality standards defined in the GI registration documentation. The primary species is Coffea canephora var. robusta. Key quality parameters include:
Note: Full quality specifications are defined in the official GI registration document held by NOIP. Buyers should request a copy of the current TCVN standard from their exporter.
EVFTA — EU Recognition of the Buon Ma Thuot GI
The EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which entered into force on 1 August 2020, includes a list of Vietnamese geographical indications recognised and protected within the European Union. The Buon Ma Thuot coffee GI is among the Vietnamese GIs listed in Annex 12-A of the EVFTA.
EU recognition means that the geographic name "Buon Ma Thuot" (and transliterations thereof) is legally protected against misuse, imitation and evocation in all 27 EU member states. Any EU-based trader, roaster, or retailer using the "Buon Ma Thuot" name for coffee not originating from the designated zone may be subject to enforcement action.
For international buyers in the EU, sourcing coffee with the Buon Ma Thuot GI provides a defensible claim of geographic authenticity and may support premium positioning, particularly as EU consumers increasingly value origin transparency and protected designations.
What the GI Means for International Buyers
Origin Verification
The GI provides a legal mechanism to verify that coffee labelled "Buon Ma Thuot" genuinely comes from the designated zone. Buyers can request GI certificates or declarations from exporters.
Minimum Quality Assurance
The GI registration defines minimum quality standards that GI-bearing coffee must meet. This provides a baseline quality assurance layer beyond individual contract specifications.
EU Labelling Rights
Under EVFTA, importers into the EU may lawfully use the Buon Ma Thuot name on packaging and in marketing for GI-compliant coffee — a strong marketing signal for specialty and origin-conscious customers.
Supply Chain Transparency
Purchasing GI-certified coffee supports traceability from farm to export. Exporters handling GI-registered coffee typically maintain more detailed supply chain records — valuable for roasters building transparency-driven brands.
