Introduction to Sourcing in Vietnam
Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer and the undisputed king of Robusta. However, sourcing premium green coffee requires navigating local grading standards, processing nuances, and complex logistics. This guide provides a roadmap for B2B buyers.
1. Understand the TCVN Grading System
Unlike SCA grading, Vietnamese coffee is graded based on the national TCVN 4193 standard. The key metrics are Screen Size (S18, S16, S13) and defect counts (Grade 1, Grade 2).
- Grade 1, Screen 18: The premium export standard, featuring large beans (≥7.1mm) and minimal defects. Ideal for specialty blends.
- Grade 2, Screen 16: The standard commercial grade, slightly smaller beans but excellent value for instant coffee production.
2. Choose Your Processing Method
The processing method drastically affects both price and cup profile:
- Natural (Dry): The traditional and most cost-effective method.
- Clean: Optically sorted to remove black and broken beans.
- Wet Polished: Mechanically polished with water to remove the silverskin, resulting in a remarkably clean and smooth cup.
3. Certifications and Sustainability
Modern consumers demand traceability. When sourcing, inquire about 4C, Rainforest Alliance, or Fairtrade certifications. Buon Ma Thuot is increasingly adopting sustainable farming practices to meet EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) compliance.
4. Logistics and Incoterms
Most Vietnamese green coffee is shipped via Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai Port). Standard trading is done on FOB (Free on Board) terms, usually packed in 60kg jute bags with GrainPro liners to preserve moisture during the long ocean transit to Europe or the US.
