Robusta G1 Wet Polished Screen 18 — The Crown Jewel of Vietnamese Coffee
Robusta G1 Wet Polished S18 is the most premium Robusta product available from Buon Ma Thuot — a coffee that challenges every assumption about what Robusta can be. Through the sophisticated wet polishing process, the harsh, earthy notes commonly associated with generic Robusta are refined into a clean, sweet, and remarkably complex cup that has earned the respect of specialty roasters worldwide.
The Wet Polishing Difference
Unlike "Clean" (dry) processing where the entire cherry is sun-dried before hulling, Wet Polished coffee undergoes a semi-washed process. After the outer cherry skin is mechanically pulped away, the beans — still coated in sticky mucilage — are scrubbed using water and mechanical friction. This removes the mucilage and polishes off the silver skin (parchment), resulting in a stunningly uniform, shiny golden-green bean that is immediately distinguishable from its clean-processed counterpart.
This polishing process does more than improve appearance. By removing the mucilage and parchment — which can contribute harsh, fermented, or rubbery flavors if not processed carefully — wet polishing produces a cleaner, sweeter cup with enhanced clarity. It is a labor-intensive and water-intensive process that commands a premium, but the results are undeniable.
The Buon Ma Thuot Terroir Signature
Sourced from select farms at 500m elevation on the basalt plateau of Dak Lak Province, these S18 beans (retained on a 7.1mm screen) represent the largest, most mature cherries of the harvest. The volcanic basalt soil, rich in iron oxide and trace minerals, imbues the beans with an extraordinary density that translates into complex flavor development during roasting.
The Geographical Indication "Cà phê Buôn Ma Thuột," protected in 32 countries, certifies that this coffee embodies the authentic terroir of the Central Highlands — a combination of soil, altitude, and climate that cannot be replicated anywhere on Earth.
Flavor Profile
This is Robusta redefined:
- Aroma: Clean dark chocolate, hazelnut, caramel — surprisingly aromatic and inviting
- Body: Velvety, smooth, and full — luxurious without the heaviness of typical Robusta
- Flavor: Dried fruit and brown sugar sweetness, with a long, clean finish. None of the rubbery or harsh notes associated with commodity Robusta
- Crema: The golden bean color translates to an exceptionally rich, honey-colored crema under espresso pressure
- Aftertaste: Lingering caramel sweetness with a hint of dark cocoa
Ideal For
This is the bean for roasters who want to showcase Robusta as a premium, stand-alone origin rather than hiding it in a blend. Ideal for specialty single-origin Robusta programs, premium espresso blends (where it can replace a portion of expensive Arabica while adding body and crema), quality-focused instant coffee, and high-end Vietnamese-style drip coffee (cà phê phin). Packaged in 60kg jute bags or 30kg GrainPro-lined bags for maximum freshness preservation.
